Lee Dong-Keun
b. 1966, South Korea

Lee Dong-Keun has long documented the social and cultural landscapes of border regions, as well as the lives of those who exist at the margins, including North Korean defectors, long-term unconverted political prisoners, and migrant spouses who have lost their homes and identities due to socioeconomic conditions and political or ideological reasons. More recently, Lee has been developing work that investigates how enemy property left behind from the Japanese colonial period (1910–1945), along with traces of colonial rule, have permeated and continue to affect Korean people’s lives today. In particular, he has continued to examine the history of Gadeokdo Island and how it is now on track to be completely transformed due to the construction of a new airport, while also documenting conflicts and memories across East Asian regions such as Okinawa and Taiwan, which share comparable historical wounds and experiences of division and militarization.
