Lee Dong-Keun
Busan-based artist Lee Dong-Keun presents two bodies of work across the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art and the Former Busan Nam High School, examining lives on the margins and unresolved geopolitical borders. Transcending national borders, Lee uses photography, video, and archives to weave the voices of people living across seas, islands, and borders into a single connected narrative.
Exhibited here at the museum, IN THE SPOTLIGHT - Arirang Performance Group is the artist's iconic series created over more than a decade of accompanying a troupe of North Korean defectors. It focuses on the histories of displacement hidden behind the spectacle of performance. Wearing brightly coloured hanbok for South Korean audiences, the performers exist offstage as border-dwellers belonging fully to neither nation. Lee’s photography captures their ordinary moments and conversations, resisting their reduction to political symbols, and instead portraying them as protagonists of their own lives.
