Lee Dong-Keun

Busan-based artist Lee Dong-Keun presents his new work, The Three Island, at the Former Busan Nam High School, examining three islands entangled in colonialism, war, and geopolitical struggles. Transcending national borders, Lee uses photography, video, and archives to weave the voices of people living across seas, islands, and borders into a single connected narrative.

His focus on marginal lives expands in The Three Island into a broader maritime geography encompassing Okinawa, Kinmen, and Busan's Gadeokdo Island. Bound by shared waters, these three islands share similar modern histories—from colonial rule and the Second World War to new forms of division and occupation. From local protests in Okinawa and artillery scars in Kinmen to Gadeokdo’s shift from a military base to a new international airport site, Lee traces the people's ongoing resistance amid the remnants of war, continuing his journey across borders.
