Moe Satt
Moe Satt’s Body, Face and Fingers is a performance and installation that explores how we communicate without words. The work began in 2008 and has continued to change as it has been performed in different places around the world. For this new version, created for the Busan Biennale, Satt works with local performers from Busan, ranging in age from 10 to over 60. The artist’s young son also takes part, bringing different generations together through movement.
In the performance, the participants use only their bodies. They combine facial expressions with hand gestures, creating 108 different movements. Many are inspired by gestures the artist observed in the streets of Yangon, Myanmar. By placing faces and fingers together in different ways, the work shows how meaning can shift depending on the body, the context, and the viewer.
The live performance is accompanied by photographs and sculptures made for this exhibition. These works record and reinterpret the 108 gestures, allowing the performance to remain present even after the live event has ended. In so doing, the body becomes a shared language, carrying stories across people, generations, and communities.
