Joshua Serafin
To enter Whispering Pleas of the Eternal Echoes is to be drawn inward. A corridor winds like a spiral, pulling visitors away from the outside world and toward something more interior.
In 1909, Joshua Serafin’s Japanese great-great-grandfather migrated to the Philippines, but the family has no records of him. Across a three-channel video installation, Serafin reconnects with their roots, driven by a desire to unfold what has not been told. The work merges generations and geographies, connecting the loose ends carried through time. Guided by a search for ancestry and belonging, Serafin navigates how unresolved questions from the past perpetuate the present. Bringing together characters across regions and eras, the artist invited their mother to appear in the film as one of the main protagonists. Images of the Philippines, their place of birth, flow into footage shot in Belgium, where they currently live. Serafin’s personal journey between Manila, Hong Kong and now Brussels, fuels their ongoing inquiry into how migration and displacement impact identity and resilience.
The work refuses linear telling, instead proposing a universe where past and present generations converse as if across a cosmic threshold. In that sense, it connects to Serafin's broader practice of building what they call "speculative cosmologies”, where spaces of imagination, liberation, and transformation are translated into immersive movements for the viewers to embark on.
