For Shuang Li, storm chasing is not simply the pursuit of extreme weather. It is a way of navigating a world defined by volatility, algorithmic circulation, and the collapse of distance between physical and digital experience. Alliance (Heart Loop) blends the aesthetics of documentary, DIY road-trip cinema, and livestreaming, following a group of sex dolls on storm-chasing journeys across diverse landscapes. Roads, gas stations, and open fields appear simultaneously familiar and alien.

The moment visitors encounter this piece—composed of six video channels arranged within the exhibition space—they are drawn in as if pulled into the very eye of a swirling storm. The figures in the video are entities that have lost their agency, swept along by the overwhelming currents of digital and algorithmic forces. They share a single, driving compulsion: to find the tornado, step inside it, and emerge transformed into entirely different beings. The storm they chase represents a literal weather phenomenon, but simultaneously signifies the massive media environment that surrounds us—a landscape where information circulates endlessly and governs our desires.

Rather than offering a critique of technology from a distance, Li immerses viewers directly within its atmosphere. Alliance (Heart Loop) suggests that we already inhabit these invisible storms, where perception is continually reorganised by data and infrastructures beyond our control. In doing so, the work depicts the desire to lose oneself in the storm, asking whether surrendering to the swirl of endless data streams might, paradoxically, be the last form of agency left to us.
