Joar Songcuya
Joar Songcuya's Seamanship Project is an ongoing series of more than 100 small paintings. Drawing on his experience as a seafarer, the artist recorded the people he encountered and their daily labour on deck. Each painting serves as both a visual diary of time spent at sea and part of a long-form archive tracing his seafaring journeys.
Presented at Space OneZ, a former warehouse used to store ship equipment, Seamanship Project resonates with the history of the site, connecting different seas, ports, and the people shaped by them. As the series continues to grow, it forms the backbone of Songcuya's artistic practice and an archive of memory from which his other works emerge and to which they continually return.
