Joar Songcuya is a Visayan marine engineer and artist whose work maneuvers between painting, maritime expertise, and personal logbooks. Born into a five-generation fishing and farming family on Panay Island, his decade-long career aboard global merchant ships traversing over 60 countries moulded his creative practice. With his practice centering on themes of maritime labor, migration, and the identity of the sea, Songcuya weaves together personal memory and loss to establish his own symbolic system.
