Brahim Tall
The Choir of Dissonance: The Creation of the Sea invites the audience to consider how individual sounds and voices can assemble to create shared experience. Brahim Tall recorded the voices of close collaborators, friends, and family members separately as they interpreted a song about the longing to become the sea. Together, this orchestra reveals how language, memory, identity, and expression can coalesce into a living sonic body.
Nineteen whispering voices gather in space, giving form to a poem in English, French, and Portuguese. These fragile and fragmented utterances rise and grow louder through the visitor’s presence, gradually forming a dense body of sound. When the room is empty, faint whispers circulate quietly. As visitors enter, the sound begins to change. Each voice remains individual, yet when they come together, they create something larger than themselves. The audience's presence is integral to the work, because it changes as people move through the space.
Through custom-built speakers positioned at the heights of the singers, these different voices gradually converge into a resonant choir, bridging distances through breath, rhythm, and shared experience. As the sound expands, this lament and homage to the sea fills the space as an echo, a plea, an invitation, and an invocation.
