Sungeun Kim is a filmmaker and audiovisual researcher based in Jeju Island. Focusing on the island’s volcanic ecology and its history of resistance, their work asks how film can become a performative medium of listening, gesturing, and relating. Their filmic works include the feature-length documentaries, Map without Island (2021) and The Memory of the 25th Hour (2017), and they continue to produce media art exhibitions and research‐based collaborative projects. Currently, they are in the process of making a feature-length experimental documentary, The Hydromantic, that follows the sound of ground water in Jeju on the path of listening to the island’s silenced histories.
