b. 1937, Sudan

Kamala Ibrahim Ishag is a Sudanese painter and pioneering figure in modern and contemporary Sudanese art. A co-founder of the Crystalists, a postmodern group that emerged in the mid-1970s, Ishag challenged the male-dominated field of Sudanese modern painting. With a career spanning more than sixty years, Ishag’s paintings often intertwine human and botanical forms through a distinctive color palette that evokes the sun, sand, and sky. Her work explores the cyclical nature of life, spirituality, and the invisible elements of women’s experiences in Sudan.
