Sungsil Ryu
b. 1993, South Korea

Sungsil Ryu is interested in the clash between Confucian values and neoliberal orders that coexist in Korean society. Reconstructing these structures through black comedic narratives, she works across a range of media, including installation, video, and performance. Her works are eagerly circulated not only within museum contexts but also through online communities, where they have gained a cult following among Korean internet users. In particular, through “Cherry Jang,” a fictional YouTuber who functions as a persona within her practice, Ryu has exposed the typical mechanisms of the online marketing environment and proposed alternative modes of artistic survival.
